Bronxville unseated Cazenovia Central as state champions of the New York Class C in a 13-10 victory.
Last year, Bronxville lost 13-11 to the Lakers last season in the state finals.
Cazenovia appeared to have the upper hand going into the game. At 22-0, the Lakers were on a 34-game win streak dating back to last year, earning them the 46th place in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings.
Bronxville, at 17-6, had a successful year in the Class C; however, the Broncos had not acquired a place in DigitalSports’ Top 50.
The game was locked up through the first three quarters. After a 5-5 halftime score line, Cazenovia took a 9-8 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Despite the tightness of the first three, the final quarter was dominated by Bronxville. The Broncos netted five goals, while only allowing one, to take a three-goal victory.
Henry Grass quarterbacked Bronxville’s offense, scoring two goals while dishing out five assists for an incredible seven-point performance. Matt Behrens always seemed to have the answer when the Broncos were looking for some momentum, ending with three goals and an assist. Michael Crawford also contributed with a hat trick and a helper.
Bronxville’s great performances extended further beyond these three players. As a team, Bronxville outshot the Lakers 47-21, won 20 more groundballs at 51-31, and went 17-of-27 at faceoffs. The Broncos all around team effort is what led to their eventually dominant final quarter and their state championship victory.
Now as state champions, Bronxville heads into the offseason with much anticipation for next year. Will the Broncos meet Cazenovia in the finals for the third consecutive year? It cannot be said. Nonetheless, look out for both of these impressive programs dominating in New York’s Class C division.
